Important Update: Gas Connections for New Homes in Victoria

Victoria is continuing its transition towards a more sustainable energy future, with new Building Electrification Regulations coming into effect from 1 January 2027. Under these changes, new homes approved after this date will generally be required to be built as all-electric homes and will not be eligible for a new connection to the natural gas network.
What does this mean for buyers?
Many established and current residential communities, including those with gas infrastructure already installed, will continue to have gas services available within the estate. However, whether a new home can ultimately connect to that infrastructure will depend on the timing of building approvals and compliance with the Victorian Government's new regulations.
Importantly, these changes primarily affect new homes approved from 1 January 2027 onwards. Existing homes with gas connections are not impacted and can continue using their current gas appliances.
